Composted Dairy Manure In Foliage Plant Production Peat has been used in container plant production since the 1960s. Highly porous and able to hold water, peat makes an ideal rooting and growing medium. But harvesting peat (and draining valuable peatlands in the process) releases carbon stored in peat into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. Researchers have worked for years to find alternative organic materials that can be used as partial or complete substitutes for peat and are now testing composted dairy manure. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA): National Priorities List ( Website for the EPA's "list of national priorities among the known releases or threatened releases of hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants throughout the United States and its territories."On this site "you can locate NPL sites, check their cleanup progress, and get information on new and proposed NPL sites."Details about sites can be viewed through a U.S. map or a database of Superfund sites searchable by numerous factors (such as contaminants). Scientists Strike Blow In Superbugs Struggle Scientists have pioneered new ways of tweaking the molecular structure of antibiotics -- an innovation that could be crucial in the fight against powerful superbugs. They have paved the way for the development of new types of antibiotics capable of fighting increasingly resistant bacteria. [Ironic] LONDON: A jailed cocaine dealer is working as Santa Claus on John Tams, who dons beard, boots and red suit to work in a cafe's Christmas grotto, said he wanted to give something back to the community... Physicist Sees Terahertz Imaging As Ultimate Defense Against Terrorism John Federici, PhD, professor, department of physics, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and other physicists at NJIT recently received a U.S. Patent for a Teraherz imaging system and method. Since 1995, Terahertz imaging has grown in importance as new and sophisticated devices and equipment have empowered scientists to understand its potential. Researchers Rely On Newton's Interference For New Experiment Most people think of Sir Isaac Newton as the father of gravity. But for some physicists Newton's "dusty mirror"experiment has served as a launching pad for them to keenly watch the X-ray induced explosion of microscopic objects. New Genome Comparison Finds Chimps, Humans Very Similar At DNA Level The first comprehensive comparison of the genetic blueprints of humans and chimpanzees shows our closest living relatives share perfect identity with 96 percent of our DNA sequence, an international research consortium reported today. The areas of human DNA where these changes occurred are currently the subject of follow-up investigations to identify the potentially vital contributions they now make to human health and development. Privacy Rule Slows Scientific Discovery And Adds Cost To Research, Sci Implementation of HIPAA Privacy Rule has severely eroded the process of scientific research, delaying some clinical studies and curtailing others before they even begin, according to scientists. A recent article reports findings from the first national survey of epidemiologists. Epidemiologists analyze the development and control of a wide array of illnesses and their impacts on public health. Making Waves: New Research Could Minimize Impact Of Future Tsunami A team of experts is preparing to create tsunami in a controlled environment in order to study their effects on buildings and coastlines -- ultimately paving the way for the design of new structures better able to withstand their impact. Ahead of today's Coastal Structures 2007 International Conference, Dr. Tiziana Rossetto, UCL Department of Civil &Environmental Engineering, unveiled plans to develop an innovative new tsunami generator capable of creating scaled-down versions of the devastating waves.
