First Bose-Einstein Condensate With Calcium Atoms Produced Physicists in Germany have succeeded for the first time worldwide in producing a Bose-Einstein condensate from the alkaline earth element calcium. The use of alkaline earth atoms creates new potential for precision measurements -- for example, for the determination of gravitational fields. High Blood Glucose Levels In Early Pregnancy May Deprive Embryo Of Oxy The babies of women with diabetes are two to five times more likely to develop birth defects than offspring of women without the disease. A recent study in animals by scientists at Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston helps explain why. The research, appearing the October issue of the American Journal of Physiology: Endocrinology and Metabolism, suggests that high blood glucose levels early in pregnancy deprive the embryo of oxygen, interfering with its development. [Scary] Pregnant woman says 'maternal instinct' helped her kill attack FORT MITCHELL, Ky. - A pregnant woman who killed her attacker said a maternal instinct helped her fight off the woman who investigators believe was after her unborn child."I do believe that I fought harder because it was for my child,"Sarah Brady told ABC's "Good Morning America"in interviews aired Sunday and Monday. "It is a maternal instinct to protect your child to the very end."Katherine Smith, 22, died Thursday after luring Brady to her apartment to pick up a package supposedly delivered to the wrong address. Brady, 26, said she didn't know Smith before the two met at Smith's apartment and can't be certain why Smith wanted to kill her."I really am not sure what was going through her mind,"Brady told ABC. "The only thing I thought was that she was going to kill me and my child and that is the only thing that ran through my mind." High Insulin Levels Increase Inflammatory Markers And Beta-amyloids, M Moderately elevated levels of insulin increase the levels of inflammatory markers and beta-amyloid in plasma and in cerebrospinal fluid, and these markers may contribute to Alzheimer's disease, according to a new study posted online today from Archives of Neurology, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. 'Instruction Manual'That Tells Cancers How To Hide From Immune System A mechanism that creates an "invisibility cloak"for certain cancer cells and allows them to hide from the immune system has been uncovered. Metastatic tumours (cancers that spread from primary site) were found to evade the immune system via a process called chromatin remodeling. NOTCHing Up Heart Development Defects in the heart and/or blood vessels (cardiovascular defects) in both humans and mice can result from mutations in any one of a number of genes encoding proteins that are part of the Notch signaling cascade. However, it has not been determined which cell type these mutations affect to cause these cardiovascular defects.
