John Fitzalan, 13th Earl of Arundel

John Fitzalan, 13th Earl of Arundel (1385-1421) was an English nobleman.

He was the son of John Fitzalan, Baron Maltravers, and Elizabeth le Despenser, and became Baron Maltravers on his father's death in 1391. In 1415 his cousin Thomas Fitzalan, 12th Earl of Arundel died, leaving John as his closest male heir. Arundel had been entailed to heirs male, and so the next year John was summoned to parliament as Earl of Arundel.

However the inheritance was challenged by Thomas Mowbray, 1st Duke of Norfolk, who was married to the late earl's eldest sister. The dispute was not settled during their lifetimes, and John was subsequently summoned to Parliament as Baron Maltravers, not Earl of Arundel.

He married Eleanor Berkeley, and was succeeded by his son John Fitzalan, 14th Earl of Arundel, who eventually made good the claim to the earldom.

Slippery When Wet: Fluids Race Through Nearly Frictionless Carbon Nano
Within the cells of our bodies, fluids flow rapidly through miniscule, nearly frictionless, protein channels. Until now, human-made nanoscale structures have not been able to mimic those same speeds because the fluids flow slowly along the walls of the tiny structures. Researchers have now found that carbon nanotubes only 7 billionths of a meter in diameter can channel many fluids nearly friction free.

New Molecule May Aid In Production Of Biofuels And Fungi-resistant Pla
In a recent study published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, scientists report on the discovery of a new molecule that is essential for degradation of the biopolymer chitin. This new molecule could eventually aid in the engineering of fungi-resistant plants and could also lead to the discovery of similar molecules that can be used in cellulose-based biofuel production.

Researchers Find Chemotherapy, Radiation Better For Patients With Loca
While researchers have learned in the last decade that combining chemotherapy with radiation is better than radiation alone for treating non-small cell lung cancer patients with locally advanced disease -- cancer confined to the lungs -- finding the right combination of drugs -- and the best timing of treatment -- has been tricky. A new study led by lung cancer specialists at Jefferson Medical College adds to growing evidence that giving patients both chemotherapy and radiation in the beginning of treatment may help patients live longer.

First 'One-way Roads' For Light Could Lead To Simpler Lightwave Techno
Light readily bounces off obstacles in its path. Some of these reflections are captured by our eyes, thus participating in the visual perception of the objects around us. In contrast to this usual behavior of light, researchers have implemented for the first time a one-way structure in which microwave light flows losslessly around obstacles or defects. This concept, when used in lightwave circuits, might one day reduce their internal connections to simple one-way conduits with much improved capacity and efficiency.

In Matters Of Sex And Death, Men Are An Essential Part Of The Equation
The standard practice of tracking only female life histories leads to mistaken conclusions about the forces that shape human evolution, according to a new article. The reason is that men's and women's age patterns of fertility differ in important ways. Scientists show that traditional mating patterns make men the key to explaining away the "wall of death,"an enduring puzzle in the study of human longevity.

Comfort Food Fallacy: Upheaval Leads To Less-familiar Choices
You'd think in times of uncertainty, people would gravitate toward familiar favorites. But a new study shows that stress and upheaval actually lead people to choose less-familiar foods over "comfort foods."

Lead With A Poisonous Electron Shield: Free Pair Of Electrons May Be T
At a molecular level, what causes the toxic effects of lead? French researchers have now applied quantum chemistry to very simple enzyme models. As they have reported in "Angewandte Chemie,"it seems that the lead's "electron shield"is the main culprit.

Rise In Dramatic Intestinal Birth Defect Probed
Researchers at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt say a nearly three fold increase in a rare birth defect called gastroschisis is raising questions about what is causing this dramatic defect.
