Stem Cell Therapy Rescues Motor Neurons In ALS Model In a study that demonstrates the promise of cell-based therapies for diseases that have proved intractable to modern medicine, scientists have shown it is possible to rescue the dying neurons characteristic of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a fatal neuromuscular disorder also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Bypassing the blues: Telephone treatment for depression post-bypass su Coronary artery bypass graft patients who were screened for depression after surgery and then cared for by a nurse-led team of health care specialists via telephone reported improved quality of life and physical function compared to those who received their doctors' usual care, according to a new study. Lipids In The Brain An Important Factor For Alzheimer's Disease? As the most common form of dementia in the Western world, Alzheimer's disease carries enormous implications for our ageing society. It is generally accepted that the disease is caused by Alzheimer peptide protofibrils. Until now, the conditions under which this type of protofibrilis formed and leads to the disease remained unknown. VIB researchers have now discovered that certain lipids, present also in our brains, promote the formation of this protofibril. Early Academic Skills, Not Behavior, Best Predict School Success Children entering kindergarten with elementary math and reading skills are the most likely to do well in school later, even if they have various social and emotional problems, say researchers who examined data from six studies of close to 36,000 preschoolers. Variation In 3 Genes Influences Risk Of Age-related Macular Degenerati Researchers in Boston have discovered a new common, noncoding variant in the Complement Factor H (CFH) gene that is associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of irreversible visual impairment and blindness among persons aged 60 and older. Their analyses, for the first time, combine this new variant with all previously reported variants to estimate individual risk of advanced AMD. Starting University May Be Hazardous To Your Health, Study Suggests Moving away from home and adapting to a new social environment are just two of the many challenges that new students face as they enter university. Cranberries May Improve Chemotherapy For Ovarian Cancer Compounds in cranberries may help improve the effectiveness of platinum drugs that are used in chemotherapy to fight ovarian cancer, researchers have found in a controlled laboratory study. The scientists found that human ovarian cancer cells resistant to platinum drugs became up to six times more sensitized to the drugs after exposure to the cranberry compounds. Type of cell proves to be highly significant in genetic studies Choosing the right cell type is particularly important in genetic studies. Researchers have now shown how variations in the genome can influence the activity of genes. This effect was found to be strongly dependent on the cell type in which these genes were active.
