The study -- conducted in Bucharest, Romania -- could be a wake-up call to nations that feel institutionalization is the best way to handle abandoned children. Children reared in institutions showed greatly diminished intellectual performance relative to children reared in their families of origin. Further, children who were randomly assigned to foster care experienced "significant gains in cognitive function." Hydrothermal Vents: Hot Spots Of Microbial Diversity Thousands of new kinds of marine microbes have been discovered at two deep-sea hydrothermal vents off the Oregon coast. The findings are the result of the most comprehensive, comparative study to date of deep-sea microbial communities that are responsible for cycling carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur to help keep Earth habitable. Ongoing human evolution could explain recent rise in certain disorders Evolutionary pressures could explain the seeming rise of disorders such as autism and autoimmune diseases, researchers report.
