Study Uses Stream Fish As Indicators Of Water Quality For many years, regulatory agencies have used chemical standards to assess water quality. Now, researchers are discovering how biological criteria can complement chemical standards to assess the status of water bodies, including streams, rivers, lakes, and estuaries. Bridging Neurons And Electronics With Carbon Nanotubes Writing in Advanced Materials, Nicholas Kotov of the University of Michigan, and colleagues describe how they have used hollow, submicroscopic strands of carbon, carbon nanotubes, to connect an integrated circuit to nerve cells. Experts Predict High Mortality Rates From Pulmonary Fibrosis Will Cont Mortality rates from pulmonary fibrosis have increased significantly in recent years, and are predicted to continue to rise, according to researchers. Between 1992 and 2003, the age-adjusted mortality rate from PF -- an often fatal disease which involves scarring of the lung -- rose by nearly 28.4 percent in men, and 41.3 percent in women. Over thesame time period, an increasing percentage of patients with PF died of the disease itself rather than of coexisting conditions. Bike Racers Gear Up With Geodata New geolocation devices worn by cyclists in the Amgen Tour of California let you follow the race in your browser. By Michael Calore. Hydrogen-generating Technology Closer Than Ever Researchers have further developed a technology that could represent a pollution-free energy source for a range of potential applications, from golf carts to submarines and cars to emergency portable generators. The technology produces hydrogen by adding water to an alloy of aluminum and gallium. When water is added to the alloy, the aluminum splits water by attracting oxygen, liberating hydrogen in the process. The researchers are developing a method to create particles of the alloy that could be placed in a tank to react with water and produce hydrogen on demand. Is Robotic Technology Reducing Health Care Costs For Cardiac Patients? While potential benefits of robotic technology include decreased morbidity and improved recovery, some have suggested a prohibitively high cost. A Billion Light Years from Home Have you ever come across this kind of description of an astronomical event?“…astronomers have witnessed a supermassive black hole blasting its galactic neighbor with a deadly beam of energy…Both galaxies are situated about 1.4 billion light-years away from Earth…The offending galaxy probably began assaulting its companion about 1 million years ago…”How can that be, asks [...] Google's Thriving Advertising Model Has Math Roots This year, predicts Advertising Age, the combined advertising revenues of Google and Yahoo! will rival the combined prime-time ad revenues of America's three big television networks, ABC, CBS and NBC.
