Childhood Cancer Survivors At Increased Risk Of Sarcoma Survivors of childhood cancers have a ninefold increased risk of developing a secondary sarcoma -- a cancer of connective or supportive tissue such as bone, fat, or muscle -- compared with the general population, according to a study in the February 21 Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Stroke and heart disease trigger revealed Scientists have identified the trigger that leads to the arteries becoming damaged in the disease atherosclerosis, which causes heart attacks and strokes. The authors of the study say their findings suggest that the condition could potentially be treated by blocking the molecule that triggers the damage. The research also suggests that bacteria may be playing a part in the disease. ALMA Telescope Reaches New Heights The ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) astronomical observatory has taken another step forward — and upwards. One of its state-of-the-art antennas was carried for the first time to the 5000m plateau of Chajnantor, in the Chilean Andes, on the back of a custom-built giant transporter. The antenna, which weighs about 100 tons and has a diameter of 12 metres, was transported up to the high-altitude Array Operations Site, where the extremely dry and rarefied air is ideal for ALMA’s observations of the Universe.
