Contrast-enhanced Magnetic Resonance Angiography Decreases Costs Vs. D The results of a new study of about 20,000 Veterans Affairs system patients undergoing diagnostic imaging for peripheral vascular disease (PVD) from 1999 to 2004 show significant cost savings with contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (CE-MRA) as compared with digital subtraction angiography (DSA). Scientists Aim To Sequence And Catalog Conifer Genes For Future Biofue Scientists are working to greatly expand the gene catalog for pines and initiate the first gene discovery efforts in five other conifer families. The goal of the research is to produce a comprehensive catalog of all the genes expressed as conifers grow, develop and respond to their environments. By comparing genes expressed by different conifer species in similar tissues under similar conditions, scientists will be able to more quickly identify the key genes controlling tree growth and development. Such studies will also improve our understanding of the formation of biomass components such as lignin that impede production of biofuels from lignocellulosic materials, including wood. Hypertension Appears To Be Frequently Undiagnosed In Children And Adol In a study of children and adolescents with hypertension, only about one in four had been previously diagnosed with the condition. Hypertension, with an estimated prevalence of between 2 percent and 5 percent, is a common chronic disease in children and is increasing in prevalence with the pediatric obesity epidemic. Focused Ultrasound Treatment Of Uterine Fibroids Provides Long Term Sy A noninvasive, outpatient treatment for noncancerous uterine tumors provides sustained relief from symptoms, according to a new collaborative study. The study of this innovative treatment approach -- called magnetic resonance imaging guided focused ultrasound surgery -- also shows that the more completely tumors are destroyed by focused ultrasound, the more durable the symptom relief. Phi on You, Beautiful Math Geek The Phi Mask uses the golden mean to calculate how subliminally disfigured your face really is. In Table of Malcontents. New Tests Identify Lethal Prion Strains Quickly And Accurately Scientists have developed two new tests for prions, infectious proteins that cause a number of diseases including "mad cow disease,"and a human counterpart, variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. These advances open the door to better understanding and diagnosis of these troubling conditions. New Study Finds Kelp Can Reduce Level Of Hormone Related To Breast Can A new study led by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, has found that a diet containing kelp seaweed lowered levels of the potent sex hormone estradiol in rats, and raised hopes that it might decrease the risk of estrogen-dependent diseases such as breast cancer in humans.
