Mass Vaccination Unnecessary In Event Of Large Bioterrorist U.S. Small Mass vaccination would not be necessary in the event of a large-scale smallpox bioterrorist attack in the United States, according to researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The Smell Of Money: Absence Of Metallic Chemicals In Odors From People It's not hard to recall the pungent scent of a handful of pocket change. Similar smells emanate from a sweat-covered dumbbell or the water emerging from an old metal pipe. Yet no one has been able to identify the exact chemical cause of these familiar odors. Making The Connection Between A Sound And A Reward Changes Brain And B If you've ever wondered how you recognize your mother's voice without seeing her face or how you discern your cell phone's ring in a crowded room, researchers may have another piece of the answer. Chloride increases response to pheromones and odors in mouse sensory n How an individual vomeronasal sensory neuron (VSN) transduces chemical signals into electrical signals has been a mystery. Researchers now show that chloride acts as a major amplifier for signal transduction in mouse VSNs, increasing the responsiveness to pheromones or odorants. Parents'Participation In Medical Decisions Linked To Self-efficacy In a new study, 86 percent of parents report that they participate in decisions made about their hospitalized child's medical care. Researchers found that parents who feel confident communicating with physicians are more likely to participate in medical decisions. Driscoll's Recipes Collection of recipes using strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and mixed berries. Features pies, shortcakes, jams, frozen desserts, salads, beverages, and other dishes. From a berry grower. Tiny Avalanche Photodiodes Target Bioterrorism Agents Researchers at Northwestern University's Center for Quantum Devices have demonstrated solar-blind avalanche photodiodes (APDs) that hold promise for universal biological agent detection. Once optimized, these sensitive detectors could be combined with the ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (LEDs) already pioneered by the Center for Quantum Devices to create an inexpensive detection system capable of identifying the unique spectral fingerprints of a biological agent attack. Virtual Finland: Independence Anniversary Year This 2007 presentation celebrates the 90th anniversary of Finland becoming an independent state in December 1917. Articles describe Finland's road to independence and celebrations in the independence anniversary year. Includes photos and a link to a site devoted to the 90th Finland independence anniversary. From the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland. Highest Energies Yet From Laser Wakefield Acceleration: From Zero To A In a precedent-shattering demonstration of the potential of laser wakefield acceleration, scientists at the Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, working with colleagues at the University of Oxford, have accelerated electron beams to energies exceeding a billion electron volts (1 GeV) in a distance of just 3.3 centimeters. Billion-electron-volt beams from laser wakefield accelerators open the way to very compact high-energy experiments and superbright free-electron lasers. Helium rain on Jupiter explains lack of neon in atmosphere When the Galileo probe descended through Jupiter's atmosphere in 1995, it found neon to be one-tenth as abundant as predicted. This unexpected finding has led researchers to propose an explanation: at about 10,000 kilometers below the cloud tops, helium condenses into droplets and falls inward, dragging neon with it and depleting Jupiter's outer layers of neon as well as helium.
