Chemical Stabilization Procedures Successfully Recover Brownfield Site A new way to clean up brownfield sites, which are abandoned industrial or commercial lands contaminated by low concentrations of hazardous waste or pollutants, has been developed. Common contaminants of industrial sites include copper, chromium, and arsenic. Iron-containing blaster sand treatment appeared to produce better long-term effects than treatment with oxygen-scarfing granulate. Research Teams Successfully Operate Multiple Biomedical Robots From Nu Using a new software protocol called the Interoperable Telesurgical Protocol, nine research teams from universities and research institutes around the world recently collaborated on the first successful demonstration of multiple biomedical robots operated from different locations in the US, Europe and Asia. SRI International operated its M7 surgical robot for this demonstration. Climate Change Was Major Factor In Erosion Of Alps 6 Million Years Ago The Alps might have reached their zenith 6 million years ago and have been declining since. New research suggests the culprit was likely massive erosion, triggered by a sudden drop in the level of the Mediterranean Sea and then prolonged by a warmer, wetter climate. Major New UNC-based Drinking Water Study Suggests Pregnancy Fears May Fears that chemical byproducts resulting from purifying drinking water with chlorine boost the chances that pregnant women will miscarry were not supported by the results of a major new study. If such threats exist at all, which is uncertain, they likely are modest, it concludes.
