Smallpox Evolved Earlier Than Believed, According To Molecular Clock A Smallpox is older than previously thought. Researchers created a molecular clock by looking at the rate of random mutations in the smallpox-causing virus collected in 47 locations around the world, from 1946 -- 1977. The variation between the strains was compared to sequences from the most similar animal poxes. The results indicated that a mild and more severe strain diverged either 16,000 or 68,000 years before present, depending on whether accounts from East Asia or Africa are used to calibrate the molecular clock. In either case, this divergence stretches further back in time than previously believed. Mechanism Behind Fear Discovered Researchers have uncovered a molecular mechanism that governs the formation of fears stemming from traumatic events. The work could lead to the first drug to treat the millions of adults who suffer each year from persistent, debilitating fears -- including hundreds of soldiers returning from conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan. Is Four Agents Decoction (Si Wu Tang) An Effective Treatment For Menst New research by scientists in Taiwan has shown that an 800-year-old formula, 4 Agents Decoction (Si Wu Tang), does not significantly reduce menstrual pain after three cycles of treatment; however, a beneficial effect may be present after a longer treatment. The dosage regimen and treatment length used in this study are not associated with adverse reactions. [Odd] Moose hunter banks on bagpipes A Swedish man is hoping to become a champion moose hunter with the aid of bagpipes. Cell That Triggers Symptoms In Allergy Attacks Can Also Limit Damage, A blood cell known as a troublemaker for triggering the itch and inflammation in allergy attacks, the mast cell, can also calm down the flare-ups, researchers have found. The findings reveal that, in mice, mast cells help decrease skin damage over time from sun exposure or from poison oak. New Test Improves Detection Of Liver Cancer Cancer of the liver is very difficult to detect, and it is a major cause of death in Asia and Africa, with rising incidence in Western countries. Researchers have now developed a test to detect liver cancer in early stage. A blood sample is the only requirement for the test. The test enables accurate detection of liver cancer in over 50 percent of the cases. Shaking Out The Family Tree: Rice Domestiction Confirmed Genetically Biologists from Washington University in St. Louis and their collaborators from Taiwan have examined the DNA sequence family tree of rice varieties and have determined that the crop was domesticated independently at least twice in various Asian locales. Exercise Tolerance Is Good Screening Test For Chest Pain Patients Mayo Clinic researchers studying patients in the emergency department with acute chest pain report in the current issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings that exercise treadmill testing (ETT) was often sufficient for evaluation. New 'Waxy' Wheat Being Tested For Public Release Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists are field-testing a soft white spring wheat whose starch could open the door to novel food uses. That's the hope of Craig Morris, a cereal chemist who developed the new wheat, called Penawawa-X, at the ARS Western Wheat Quality Laboratory at Pullman, Wash. Street Lit Takes a Hit: An African American Author Raps the Genre, But This 2006 article discusses how "urban fiction, street lit, ghetto fiction, gangsta lit, whatever you call it, this gritty genre of African American writing is enormously popular, both in bookstores and libraries,"but is not popular with Nick Chiles, an education reporter and author, who believe these novels glamorize black criminals.
