IPCC Synthesis Report: Risks And Rewards Of Combating Climate Change The fourth IPCC report raises serious concerns of species extinction as well as arguing strongly in favor of stepping up support and action on adaptation to the effects of global warming. The report says that around 20 per cent to 30 per cent of the plant and animal species assessed are likely to be at increased risk of extinction if global average temperatures exceed 1.5 degree C to 2.5 degree C over late 20th century levels. The report also points to the likelihood of "irreversible"impacts. For example if temperature increases exceed about 3.5 degrees C, between 40 per cent and 70 per cent of the species assessed might be at increased risk of extinction. Infant Hearing Test Results May Predict Sudden Infant Death Syndrome One of the greatest medical mysteries of our time has taken a leap forward in medical understanding with new research. A new study found that all babies who died of SIDS universally shared the same distinctive difference in their newborn hearing test results for the right inner ear, when compared to infants who did not have SIDS. Cannabis hope for inflammatory bowel disease Chemicals found in cannabis could prove an effective treatment for the inflammatory bowel diseases ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, say scientists. Laboratory tests have shown that two compounds found in the cannabis plant – the cannabinoids THC and cannabidiol – interact with the body’s system that controls gut function. Dementia Screening In Primary Care: Is It Time? Primary care physicians should focus on "dementia red flags"rather than routinely screen individuals with no dementia symptoms just because they've reached a certain age, according to a new article. San Andreas Fault Observatory At Depth Reveals New Insights Into The ' The San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD) -- the first underground observatory to provide physical samples and real-time seismological data from deep inside an active fault zone -- is yielding surprising new clues about the origin of earthquakes. SAFOD scientists from around the world met to discuss these new findings recently at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) at Moscone Center West in San Francisco. Genetic variant associated with aggressive form of prostate cancer Researchers have identified the first genetic variant associated with aggressive prostate cancer, proving the concept that genetic information may one day be used in combination with other factors to guide treatment decisions. Cancer stem cells suppress immune response against brain tumor Cancer-initiating cells that launch glioblastoma multiforme, the most lethal type of brain tumor, also suppress an immune system attack on the disease, scientists have found. Mirror, Mirror on the Phone LG unveils Shine, the successor to its popular Chocolate phone. In Gear Factor. New Record For Brightness Of Quantum Dots Set By placing quantum dots on a specially designed photonic crystal, researchers have demonstrated enhanced fluorescence intensity by a factor of up to 108. Potential applications include high-brightness light-emitting diodes, optical switches and personalized, high-sensitivity biosensors.
