Pamela Colman Smith

Pamela Colman Smith (1878 - 1951) was an artist, illustrator, and writer. Her chief claim to fame is designing the Rider-Waite-Smith deck of tarot cards for Arthur Edward Waite.

Smith was born in England to American parents, and grew up in Jamaica. She toured with the theatre company of Ellen Terry and Henry Irving in the late 1890s, where she joined the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and met Waite. She also did a great deal of illustration work for William Butler Yeats and his brother Jack, but apart from this deck, her art found little commercial success.

In addition to the tarot deck, Smith wrote and illustrated several books about Jamaican folklore, including Annancy Stories (1902) which were about Jamaican versions of tales involving the traditional African folk figure Anansi the Spider.

First X-Ray Detection Of A Colliding-Wind Binary Beyond Milky Way
Imagine two stars with winds so intense that they eject an Earth's worth of material roughly once every month. Next, imagine those two winds colliding head-on. Such titanic collisions produce multimillion-degree gas, which radiates brilliantly in X-rays. Astronomers have conclusively identified the X-rays from about two-dozen of these systems in our Milky Way. But they have never seen one outside our galaxy -- until now.

Self-assembled DNA Scaffolding Used To Build Tiny Circuit Boards
Scientists have developed a new technique to orient and position self-assembled DNA shapes and patterns -- or "DNA origami" -- on surfaces that are compatible with today's semiconductor manufacturing equipment. These precisely positioned DNA nanostructures, each no more than one one-thousandth the width of a human hair, can serve as scaffolds or miniature circuit boards for the precise assembly of computer-chip components.

In reality they were masterpieces of the grotesque, venomous in humour, spiteful and rude, expressing anything but love."Information about the origin, size, and approximate date of each card is included along with selections from period newspapers.
