WHO Recommends Influenza Vaccine Composition For Northern Hemisphere 2 This year, more than 10 000 influenza viruses from all continents were isolated and characterized by the WHO/National Influenza Centres. These laboratories, which are located in more than 80 countries, form the backbone of the global influenza surveillance programme. Based on that assembled information, WHO today published its recommendations on the formulation of the influenza vaccine for the Northern Hemisphere. Why Do So Many Species Live In Tropical Forests And Coral Reefs? There is a new development in a major debate over a controversial hypothesis of biodiversity and species abundance. Ecologists are reporting good agreement between the species richness of two of the most vulnerable ecosystems -- tropical forests and coral reefs -- and a simple mathematical model building on the "neutral theory of biodiversity."The research could aid the effort to protect terrestrial biodiversity from climate change and urban development. Antipsychotic Drugs Stop Fatal Viral Infection In Brain Cells Generic antipsychotic drugs can protect brain cells from a virus that causes a fatal nervous system disorder, according to research conducted at Brown University and Case Western Reserve University. Batten Down The Hatches Against HIV: Carbon Nanotubes Transport Gene T A promising approach to gene therapy involves short DNA fragments (interfering RNA) that bind to specific genes and block their "translation"into the corresponding, disease-related protein. A stumbling block has been the efficient and targeted delivery of RNA into the cells. Researchers led by Hongjie Dai at Stanford University have sucessfully used carbon nanotubes as a "means of transport,"they write in "Angewandte Chemie." Geriatric Health Conditions Have Major Effect On Half Of All Seniors While much of the medical world focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, a new study from the University of Michigan Health System finds that half of all seniors have a geriatric condition that can affect their ability to engage in activities of daily living as much as diseases can. Yet these conditions often aren't recognized or treated because they don't fall into the category of a disease. Alcohol Increases Sleep Intensity In Young Women While numerous studies have linked alcohol abuse to sleep disruption, especially in males, there has been little research on alcohol and its effects on sleep in females. Now, a new study shows that a moderate amount of alcohol, taken before bed, can impact the quality of sleep for young women.
