New Findings Support A Central Role For NMDA Receptors In Learning And This week, researchers report that by making targeted genetic disruptions that disable a key neurotransmitter receptor in the fruit fly, they have uncovered an important clue to the physiological mechanisms at work in learning and memory. The subject of the study was the so-called NMDA receptor -- a neurotransmitter receptor possessing special properties that could make it especially useful in learning and memory. Normal But Out-of-control Enzyme May Be Culprit That Signals Some Cell Working with human colorectal cancer cells researchers have found the potential culprit among a network of enzymes that relay signals inside cells to regulate such functions as cell growth, cancer development and programmed cell death. The work suggests that drugs designed to disable the enzyme, known as TOPK, could have anticancer benefits. Climate Change Tops Americans' Environmental Concerns According to a recent MIT survey, Americans now rank climate change as the country's most pressing environmental problem -- a dramatic shift from three years ago, when they ranked climate change sixth out of 10 environmental concerns. Novel Mechanism For DNA Replication Discovered Since the discovery of the structure of DNA, the paradigm for DNA replication has stated that the DNA itself codes for replication. In other words, if a guanine base is on the original strand of DNA then its partner, a cytosine base, will pair to it on the replicated strand. Researchers from Mount Sinai School of Medicine report on the first instance in which a protein provides the coding information. Hall of Flame Fire Museum/National Firefighting Hall of Heroes This museum in Phoenix, Arizona, features exhibits of restored firefighting equipment and "honors firefighters who have died in the line of duty or who have been decorated for heroism."The site includes images of objects and graphics in the collection. Most of the exhibits are of material from the United States. Also includes links to related sites. Survey of Mexican Migrants, Part Two: Attitudes About Voting in Mexica This survey, released in March 2005, reports that of the "nearly 5,000 Mexican migrants who were interviewed while applying for identity cards at Mexican consulates in the United States ... an overwhelming majority would vote in Mexican elections scheduled for next year if they had the opportunity."Includes a summary and the complete report. From the Pew Hispanic Center. Practice Parameters: Assessment and Management of Patients in the Pers Overview of the diagnosis, prognosis, and survival of adults and children in a persistent vegetative state (PVS). "Patients in a vegetative state show no evidence of awareness of self or environment and an inability to interact with others,"along with several other factors. Includes data. How one form of natural vitamin E protects brain after stroke Blocking the function of an enzyme in the brain with a specific kind of vitamin E can prevent nerve cells from dying after a stroke, new research suggests. In a study using mouse brain cells, scientists found that the tocotrienol form of vitamin E, an alternative to the popular drugstore supplement, stopped the enzyme from releasing fatty acids that eventually kill neurons. Zebrafish study with human heart implications: Cellular grown-ups outp Bony fish like the tiny zebrafish have a remarkable ability that mammals can only dream of: if you lop off a chunk of their heart they swim sluggishly for a few days but within a month appear perfectly normal. How they accomplish this -- or, more importantly, why we can't -- is one of the significant questions in regenerative medicine today. Signs Of Aging: Scientists Evaluate Genes Associated With Longevity Scientists at the BC Cancer Agency's Genome Sciences Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and at the University of Missouri-Columbia have collaborated on a detailed study to elucidate gene-expression patterns implicated in the aging process. Their results appear online on April 18, 2005 and in the May issue of the journal Genome Research.
