New Links Among Alcohol Abuse, Depression, Obesity In Young Women Foun There is new evidence that depression, obesity and alcohol abuse or dependency are interrelated conditions among young adult women but not men. First Comprehensive Study Of Proteins Inside A Single Type Of Cell Scientists have provided the first large-scale study of proteins inside human cells called Jurkat T cells. The study could provide a better understanding of how proteins inside a specific type of cell work together and may pave the way for future detailed studies of how proteins work in other types of cells. Past studies have been performed in model organisms such as yeast and different organelles from mice, but no comprehensive analysis of a single type of human cell has been carried out to date. Natural Climate Changes Can Intensify Hurricanes More Efficiently Than Natural climate variations, which tend to involve localized changes in sea surface temperature, may have a larger effect on hurricane activity than the more uniform patterns of global warming. In the debate over the effect of global warming on hurricanes, it is generally assumed that warmer oceans provide a more favorable environment for hurricane development and intensification. However, several other factors, such as atmospheric temperature and moisture, also come into play. MIT's Nanoprinter Could Mass-produce Nano-devices Just as the printing press revolutionized the creation of reading matter, a "nano-printing"technique developed at MIT could enable the mass production of nano-devices currently built one at a time. The most immediate candidate for this innovation is the DNA microarray, a nano-device used to diagnose and understand genetic illnesses such as Alzheimer's, viral illnesses such as AIDS, and certain types of cancer. The ability to mass produce these complex devices would make DNA analysis as common and inexpensive as blood testing, and thus greatly accelerate efforts to discover the origins of disease. Rusty nanoparticles and arsenic poisoning A subject that I have returned to on several occasions is arsenic-contaminated drinking water. This insidious environmental disaster was first brought to light by Dipankar Chakraborti of the University of Jadavpur whom I interviewed for The Guardian in 1995. However, the problem has not gone away. Various research teams have looked at various solutions to [...] UV Light Improving Chances Of Fighting Cancer A new cancer fighting technology uses ultraviolet light to activate antibodies which very specifically attack tumours. Therapeutic antibodies have long been recognized as having excellent potential but getting them to efficiently target tumour cells has proved to be very difficult. Eelgrass Provides A Refuge From Predators For Some Fish Species The meadows of eelgrass found in lagoons along the Atlantic seacoast have a long history of providing a habitat for fish and invertebrates of many species. Despite this long history, it has proven difficult to document and quantify the relationships between eelgrass cover and the abundance of fish and crabs on a larger scale. Volunteering may prevent the elderly from becoming frail A study suggests that participating in volunteer activities may prevent frailty in older adults. Handbook On Pay and Leave Benefits For Federal Employees Affected By S "Provides a general summary of the many pay and leave benefits available to assist Federal agencies and employees who must cope with severe weather emergencies or other emergency situations and their aftermath. ... Since many of the benefits discussed in this Handbook may be granted at the discretion of each employing agency, employees should contact their agency's human resources office for further information."Opens directly into a PDF file. From the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM). New Technology Quickly Finds Leaks In Spacecraft Tiny meteors flash through space. There's spacecraft debris flying around, too. And so there's a risk that objects just a few millimeters across could pierce the thin aluminum skin of spacecraft such as the International Space Station orbiting 220 miles above Earth. A tiny hole means a tiny leak of pressurized air. And these leaks can be hard to find. Researchers have developed a new tool that will make finding these leaks quick and easy.
