Wartime Raises Stress, Blood Pressure Rates In Military Offspring Children with parents in the military have higher blood pressure, heart rates and general stress levels than their peers during wartime, researchers say. How Nanocrystals Crumple: New Window Into Deformation Of Nanoscale Mat Some nanoscale crystals can be perfect, and scientists long assumed that a crystal needs to be perfect to sustain stress at its theoretical limit. Beyond this point, dislocations in the crystal lattice occur and the crystal undergoes plastic deformation. In new research at DOE's National Center for Electron Microscopy, Berkeley Lab scientists have discovered that in fact many defects can accumulate in a nanocrystal before the initial yield point of plastic deformation. Personality Predictors Of Intelligence Change From Younger To Older Ad An ability to be open to new situations may predict intelligence earlier in life, says a new study, but disagreeableness may predict intelligence later in life. According to the findings, differences in personality predictors of intelligence were found between young adults, and those who retain a normal level of overall cognitive ability in old age and those older adults who are cognitively superior. Getting Livestock Vaccines Past A Maternal Block Use of a virus linked to the common cold is among the novel approaches Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists in Iowa are using to bypass maternal defenses that thwart vaccination of very young livestock. It's Not All Genetic: Common Epigenetic Problem Doubles Cancer Risk In In experiments with mice, a team of scientists from the United States, Sweden and Japan has discovered that having a double dose of one protein is sufficient to change the normal balance of cells within the lining of the colon, thereby doubling the risk that a cancer-causing genetic mutation will trigger a tumor there. Roughly 10 percent of people have this double protein dose as well. Jack London: Author and Adventurer Companion to a collection of material about fiction and nonfiction author Jack London.
