Tom Collins

The Tom Collins is an American cocktail invention made of:

  • 1 part gin
  • lemon juice
  • sugar
  • splash of soda

Shake gin with lemon, sugar and ice. Pour into a Collins glass and top with soda. Garnish with an orange slice, lemon slice, or cocktail cherry. The garnishes vary by region.

Nowadays, the club soda, lemon juice, and sugar are replaced with a mix.

Various versions replace the gin and rename the drink:

  • Brandy Collins (Brandy)
  • Jack Collins (Applejack)
  • John Collins (Bourbon)
  • Mike Collins (Irish whiskey)
  • Pedro Collins (Rum), also Rum Collins
  • Sandy (or Jock) Collins (Scotch)
  • Vodka Collins (Vodka)

Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot: New Study Suggests Ways To Control Fever-induce
Scientists show that genetic variation in the foraging gene results in different tolerance for heat stress and demonstrate how the use of specific drugs can replicate this effect in fruit flies and locusts. While the findings are at an early stage, the researchers suggest that they could lead to ways to rapidly protect the brain from extremely high fevers in mammals, including humans.

Bad Aftertaste? New Sensory On/off Switch May 'Cure' Bane Of Artificia
Nothing leaves a bad taste in your mouth like an aftertaste. The commercially and esthetically inconvenient phenomenon prompts masking or removing bitter tastes (from spinach to saccharin) by depleting nutrition and/or adding calories. The frustrating hunt for acceptable artificial sweeteners suffers a similar fate -- they can't match sugar. Hebrew University researchers found what could be an on/off switch involving signal-terminating kinases that might unlock these taste woes, with potential for application in other sensory areas.

A Biomolecule As A Light Switch
Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Goettingen, Germany have uncovered the molecular mechanism of switchable fluorescent proteins, able to switch themselves reversibly back-and-forth between an "on"and "off"state. The discovery could be of importance for, among other purposes, optical data storage in protein crystals.

Fisheries Should Be Regarded As Part Of Maritime Environment, Experts
Professional fishery is in many sea areas a serious ecological threat to the maritime environment. On the other hand, changes in the environment, e.g. the increase of fish-eating animals like seals and cormorants, may impact the fisheries. One of the new guiding principles of political decision-making in fishery issues is that a holistic "ecosystems approach"should be used instead of traditional protection of fish populations.
