NASA's Largest Space Telescope Mirror Will See Deeper Into Space
When scientists are looking into space, the more they can see, the easier it is to piece together the puzzle of the cosmos. The James Webb Space Telescope's mirror blanks have now been constructed. When polished and assembled, together they will form a mirror whose area is over seven times larger than the Hubble Telescope's mirror.

How Would The Avian Influenza Virus Be Transmitted In Human Households
Scientists have used data from a small but well-defined study of H7N7 avian influenza virus transmission in human households to estimate transmissibility in humans living in close contact.

Tubular materials
Ever since the discovery of the all-carbon fullerenes and their linear cousins the carbon nanotubes, researchers have focused on unravelling their intriguing properties and finding applications.

Largest Transiting Extrasolar Planet Found Around A Distant Star
Astronomers with the Transatlantic Exoplanet Survey just announced discovery of TrES-4, a new extrasolar planet in the constellation Hercules. According to the lead author, TrES-4 is the largest known exoplanet. It is 70 percent bigger than Jupiter with an extremely low density. The new planet, first noticed by the PSST at Lowell Observatory also has an unusual subgiant host star.

New Blood Test Might Offer Early Warning Of Deep Belly Fat
Measuring levels of a chemical found in blood offers the best indicator yet of the amount of fat surrounding abdominal organs, according to a new study of lean and obese individuals. The buildup of such "visceral fat"is of particular health concern as it has been linked to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease risk.

NIH Panel Seeks To Dispel Stigma Associated With Fecal And Urinary Inc
An independent panel convened this week by the NIH found that fewer than half of individuals experiencing fecal or urinary incontinence -- the inability to control bowel movements or urination, respectively -- report their symptoms to healthcare providers without being prompted. The secrecy and distress surrounding these issues erode the quality of life for millions, and hamper scientific understanding and development of prevention and treatment strategies.

Scientists Use 'Dark Web'To Snag Extremists And Terrorists Online
Terrorists and extremists have set up shop on the Internet, using it to recruit new members, spread propaganda and plan attacks across the world. The size and scope of these dark corners of the Web are vast and disturbing. But in a non-descript building in Tucson, a team of computational scientists are using the cutting-edge technology and novel new approaches to track their moves online, providing an invaluable tool in the global war on terror. Funded by the National Science Foundation and other federal agencies, Hsinchun Chen and his Artificial Intelligence Lab at the University of Arizona have created the Dark Web project, which aims to systematically collect and analyze all terrorist-generated content on the Web.
