Acoustic Data May Reveal Hidden Gas, Oil Supplies Just as doctors use ultrasound to image unborn babies, MIT researchers listen to the echoing language of rocks to map what's going on tens of thousands of feet below the Earth's surface. Now the scientists will use their skills to find pockets of natural gas and oil contained in fractured porous rocks in a Wyoming oil field. If the method proves effective, it could be used at oil and gas fields across the country. Dietary Restriction Cleans Cells Cutting calories helps rodents live longer by boosting cells'ability to recycle damaged parts so they can maintain efficient energy production, according to a new study. Understanding how the process works at the cellular level in rodents could help scientists develop drugs that mimic the process in humans. Reclaiming Plastics From Junkyard Cars Feasible With New Technique Once plastics have been built into a car, they are rarely recycled. Compressed into granulate material, the shredded plastic parts are usually too indiscriminately mixed to permit any further use. Researchers have now found a way of separating the different types of plastic. Every end-of-life car is a source of raw materials -- in theory anyway. In practice, however, these resources are still used far too seldom -- particularly where plastics are concerned. Promising Antiobesity Drug Fails To Produce Clinically Meaningful Weig A drug designed to target a powerful hunger-stimulating factor that has long been considered a prime target for antiobesity therapy failed to produce clinically meaningful weight loss in obese people in a long-term clinical trial. People taking the drug known as MK-0557 for a year consistently lost about three pounds more than those taking a placebo, researchers reported in the October issue of the journal Cell Metabolism, published by Cell Press. Columbia Team Shows How Stratospheric Conditions Affect Weather Three members of Columbia's Department of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics have used a simple climate model to demonstrate how the weather systems and storms we experience may be influenced by disturbances in the Earth's stratosphere, the upper layer of atmosphere between 10 and 30 miles high. Variant Prion Protein Causes Infection But No Symptoms Abnormal prion proteins are little understood disease agents involved in causing horrific brain-wasting diseases such as Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease in people, mad cow disease in cattle and chronic wasting disease in deer and elk. Now, new research suggests that a variant form of abnormal prion protein--one lacking an 'anchor' into the cell membrane--may be unable to signal cells to start the lethal disease process. Anti-viral Protein That May Predict Risk Of Developing Lupus Identifie Certain families produce higher levels of a specific molecule, called interferon-alpha, that primes the body's immune system to turn on, and in some cases initiate an autoimmune attack on itself, according to new research. Our immune system is able to defeat disease-causing viruses and bacteria every day using chemical weapons, like interferon-alpha, that have been honed over time. But like anything else, we can have too much of a good thing. [Ironic] LONDON: A jailed cocaine dealer is working as Santa Claus on John Tams, who dons beard, boots and red suit to work in a cafe's Christmas grotto, said he wanted to give something back to the community... Gentler Chemotherapy Before Stem Cell Transplant Causes Long-term Remi Treating relapsed follicular lymphoma patients with a milder chemotherapy regimen before they receive a blood stem cell transplant from a donor resulted in long-term complete remission for 45 of 47 patients in a clinical trial. The New Commission on the Skills of the American Workforce On December 14, 2006, this commission "unveiled recommendations calling for the biggest changes in the American education system in a century."Suggestions include offering universal pre-kindergarten programs, and enrolling students in college after 10th grade. The site provides a 28-page summary of the report, "Tough Choices or Tough Times,"and links to media coverage and to other commission papers.
