Tommy Douglas

Thomas Clement Douglas (1904-1986) was a Scottish-born Canadian Baptist minister, politician, and premier of Saskatchewan from 1944 to 1961. He was one of the founders of the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), a left-wing political party, and as premier formed North America's first socialist government, introducing innovative social reforms such as hospital insurance, the beginning of Canada's medicare program.

Douglas was born on October 20 1904, in Falkirk, Scotland. In 1910, his family emigrated to Canada, where they located in Winnipeg. During WWI, the family returned to Glasgow but came back to Winnipeg in 1920.

On June 15 1944 Douglas led the Saskatchewan CCF to power in the provincial general election, winning 47 of 53 seats.

When the CCF became the New Democratic Party in 1961, Douglas became its first leader, serving until 1971. After his resignation, he kept his seat in the House of Common until 1979.

Douglas died of cancer on February 24 1986 at the age of 81.

He was also the father of Canadian actress Shirley Douglas, and the grandfather of Kiefer Sutherland.

Jump-starting T Cells In Skin Cancer
Advanced melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, can be successfully treated in some cases by vaccinating patients with tumor proteins. How these vaccines work and why they are only effective in some patients remains unclear. Pierre Coulie and colleagues now show, in two articles in the January 17 issue of the Journal of Experimental Medicine, that these vaccines work by increasing the number of immune cells called killer T cells that can attack the tumor. In an unexpected finding, however, they discovered that that these cells mostly recognize tumor proteins that were not contained in the vaccine.

3-D Imaging Of Motor Proteins Provides New Insights To Molecular Mecha
Scientists from the Burnham Institute for Medical Research and the University of Vermont have captured the first 3-dimensional (3D) atomic-resolution images of the motor protein myosin V as it "walks"along other proteins, revealing new structural insights that advance the current model of protein motility and muscle contraction. The culmination of four years of work, this collaboration among biochemists and structural biologists was selected as the cover story for the September issue of the scientific journal Molecular Cell.
