Tommy James & the Shondells

Tommy James and the Shondells was a rock and roll group, initially formed in 1964 as The Shondells. Their first single, "Hanky Panky"(1964) (originally by The Raindrops), was a national number one hit. Shortly afterwards the original group split and Tommy James (b. April 29, 1947) formed a new group of the same name in 1967. A number of hits followed, including I Think We're Alone Now(1967) and later a hit for Tiffany, Crystal Blue Persuasion, Sweet Cherry Wine, Crimson and Clover(1968) and Mony Mony(1967), written by James and inspired by the sign for Municipality Of New York that hung outside his office. The latter group split in 1969, after which James achieved limited solo success.

Protection Against Cancer May Begin During Pregnancy, Nursing
Pregnant and nursing women who eat generous amounts of cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cabbage could help protect their children from cancer, both as infants and later in life. A new study done with laboratory mice found that phytochemicals found in certain vegetables provided a very high level of protection against leukemia and lymphoma in young animals, and also significantly protected against lung cancer during the rodent's equivalent of middle age.

Northwest Biodiesel Network
The website for this organization promoting the use of biodiesel ("renewable fuel made which is primarily made from any vegetable or animal oil source") provides general resources about the fuel and information specific to using biodiesel in the Pacific Northwest. Features a list of filling stations and producers, sources for locating a biodiesel-compatible vehicle, Northwest businesses that use biodiesel in their vehicles, and links to news about biodiesel.

Hirsute Or Hairless? Two Proteins May Spell The Difference
In a new study, Elaine Fuchs and colleagues use a three-pronged approach--involving gene expression analysis, transgenic mice, and cell cultures--to study how epithelial buds, the precursors of hair follicles, form. Their experiments point to two key actors in a signaling pathway that molds a targeted cluster of cells into a hair bud.

Malt Liquor Linked To Marijuana Use Among Young Adults
Drinking malt liquor -- the cheap, high-alcohol beverage often marketed to teens -- may put young adults at increased risk for alcohol problems and use of illicit drugs, particularly marijuana, according to a new study of malt liquor drinkers and marijuana use by scientists at the University at Buffalo's Research Institute on Addictions.

Coral Stress 'Like Never In History'
Large scale coral die-offs are now occurring more frequently than at any time in the last 11 000 years, according to a new study by Australian-based scientists. Investigations by Associate Professor John Pandolfi, of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Coral Reef Studies and the University of Queensland, of fossilized reefs in Papua New Guinea show how often the reefs were "wiped out"by disastrous events in past times.

Nanotubes for the hydrogen economy
Finding an inexpensive and sustainable source of hydrogen will be critical to the success of the so-called hydrogen economy in which fuel cells and other devices are driven by the gas.

What Are The Early Warning Signs Of Autism?
Recognizing autism spectrum disorders early will ultimately improve the lives of children with ASDs and their families. Two new guides help. Most children, at some time during early development, form attachments with a stuffed animal, special pillow or blanket. Children with ASDs may prefer hard items (ballpoint pens, flashlight, keys, action figures, etc.). They may insist on holding the object at all times.

Bumblebee See, Bumblebee Do
Just as travelers figure out which restaurant is good by the numbers of cars in the parking lot, bumblebees decide which flowers to visit by seeing which ones already have bee visitors. The finding is the first demonstration that insects can learn by just watching the behavior of other insects.

Flood-Damaged Walls, Ceilings and Floors: Removing Moisture, Cleaning
