Tonga Trench

The Tonga trench is located in the Pacific ocean and is 32,000 feet deep.

The Tonga Trench and its forearc form an active convergent margin between two plates of the lithosphere, the Pacific plate being subducted into the earth's semi-molten aesthenosphere, and the northeastern corner of the Australian plate overriding it. The Tonga trench extends north-northeast from the North Island of New Zealand.

The convergence is taking place at breath-taking speed: a rate estimated at approximately 15 cm/yr (by Lonsdale, 1986); however, recent Global Positioning Satellite measurements indicate in places a convergence of 24 cm/yr across the northern Tonga Trench, which is the fastest plate velocity yet recorded on the planet (Bevis et al., 1995).

Such oceanic trenches are important sites for the formation of what will become continental crust and for recycling of material back into the mantle. Along the Tonga Trench mantle-derived melts are transferred to the island arc systems, and abyssal oceanic sediments and fragments of oceanic crust are collected.

Mechanism For The In-vivo Transport Of SiRNA
RNA interference, a natural mechanism that inhibits the gene expression of individual genes in eukaryotic cells, is a major topic in modern biology. However, their potential was usable to only a limited extent in mammals because the mechanism for the uptake of small RNAs was unknown up to now. Biologists have now clarified this, which also opens the door for therapies based on this mechanism.

Cutting the Cost of Watts and Soaking up CO2
In this month’s Intute Spotlight, I report on a new approach to carbon storage that researchers hope will allow us to reduce or stabilise atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, although I have my doubts.Carbon sequestration is a well-studied theoretical approach to reduce carbon emissions by locking up carbon dioxide deep in the ground or on the [...]

Mars Rovers Survive Severe Dust Storms, Ready For Next Objectives
Two months after sky-darkening dust from severe storms nearly killed NASA's Mars exploration rovers, the solar powered robots are awake and ready to continue their mission. Opportunity's planned descent into the giant Victoria Crater was delayed, but now the rover is preparing to drive into the 800-meter-diameter crater (half-mile-diameter) as early as Sept. 11. Spirit, Opportunity's rover twin, also survived the global dust storms. The rovers are 43 months into missions originally planned to last three months. On Sept. 5, Spirit climbed onto its long-term destination called Home Plate, a plateau of layered bedrock bearing clues to an explosive mixture of lava and water.

Treatment Advances For Lymphoma Have Reduced Deaths By 70%
