Bone Marrow Restores Fertility In Female Mice, Study Confirms A new study confirms that female mice that receive bone marrow transplantation after fertility-destroying chemotherapy can go on to have successful pregnancies throughout their normal reproductive life. The report verifies that donor marrow can restore fertility in mice through an as-yet unidentified mechanism. While donor-derived oocytes were observed in the ovaries of marrow recipients, all pups born were from the recipients'own eggs. Chronic Back Pain Shrinks 'Thinking Parts' Of The Brain, Study Finds Chronic back pain, a condition afflicting many Americans, shrinks the brain by as much as 11 percent -- equivalent to the amount of gray matter lost in 10 to 20 years of normal aging, a Northwestern University research study found. Baiji Dolphin Previously Thought Extinct Spotted In The Yangtze River The reported sighting of a Yangtze River dolphin, or Baiji, means there is still a chance for people to take further action and protect the cetaceans in the Yangtze from extinction, according to World Wildlife Fund. Based on the river's geographic and hydrological complexity and the official definition of extinction by IUCN, WWF and many scientists agreed that this species was "functionally extinct", but thought it was still too early to declare its extinction. Important DNA Repair Mechanism Linked To Premature Aging Yields Scientists have elucidated the first steps of transcription-coupled repair (TCR), a critical but still mysterious mechanism of DNA repair. When genetic information is being transcribed from DNA to RNA, TCR detects obstructions and repairs damage. But when TCR itself fails, the results can be lethal to cells and the organism. In humans, failure of TCR is the cause of Cockayne Syndrome, an extreme form of accelerated aging that is inevitably fatal early in life. Characteristics Of Increased Risk For Compulsive Gambling Linked To Pa Patients with Parkinson's disease who are younger when they develop the condition, have a personality trait known as novelty-seeking or whose personal or family history includes alcohol abuse may be more likely to develop pathological gambling as a side effect of medications used to treat their condition, according to a report in the February issue of Archives of Neurology, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. Anti-Bacterial Additive Widespread In U.S. Waterways Many rivers and streams in the United States are believed to contain a toxic antimicrobial chemical whose environmental fate was never thoroughly scrutinized despite large-scale production and usage for almost half a century, according to an analysis conducted by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. New Research Offers Clues To Prevent Brain Damage In Premature Babies Factors that inhibit the brain's natural self-healing process and that may offer new insights into how to prevent brain damage in premature babies have been identified. Lazy Eye: Older Children Can Benefit From Treatment For Childhood's Mo Surprising results from a nationwide clinical trial show that many children age 7 through 17 with amblyopia (lazy eye) may benefit from treatments that are more commonly used on younger children. Innovative CRTs Track Heart Patients Progress From Home Cardiologists at the University of Mississippi Medical Center are among the first to use radio frequency technology to monitor the cardiovascular status of heart failure patients from their homes. By implanting a state-of-the-art cardiac resynchronization therapy device (CRT), UMC cardiologists can connect with patients directly and get up-to-the-second information about their heart status from miles away.
