NASA Researchers Use Imaging Radar To Detect Coastal Pollution A NASA-funded study of marine pollution in Southern California concluded space-based synthetic aperture radar can be a vital observational tool for assessing and monitoring ocean hazards in urbanized coastal regions. Male Body Odor Can Stink Like Urine Or Have A Pleasant Vanilla Smell, Why the same sweaty man smells sweet like vanilla to one person and repellent like urine to another comes down to the smeller's genes. Up to one-third of adult humans cannot perceive an odor in a component of male body odor that induces physiological responses in both men and women. To those who do, androstenone either takes on a pleasant sweet odor or a repulsive urine-like one. New research traces this variability to mutations in a single odorant receptor gene, a finding that raises questions of how people detect other people's body odor. Smart Insulin Nanostructures Pass Feasibility Test, Study Reports Biomedical engineers have announced pre-clinical test results demonstrating the feasibility of a smart particle insulin release system that detects spikes in glucose or blood sugar levels and releases insulin to counteract them. Designed to mimic functions of the pancreas which produces the blood-sugar regulating hormone insulin, the smart particle system stabilized blood sugar levels in animal models with suppressed pancreatic functions for up to six hours, researchers reported. It is an inhalable system. A Public Trust at Risk: The Heritage Health Index Report on the State The report from a survey in December 2005 that concluded "immediate action is needed to prevent the loss of millions of irreplaceable artifacts"in libraries and museums. Areas of concern included permanent damage to items, lack of emergency planning, and conservation staffing. Also includes links to related information. Prepared Remarks of Attorney General Ashcroft: The Proven Tactics in t In this September, 2003 speech to the National Restaurant Association, Attorney General John Ashcroft dismissed concerns about the USA PATRIOT Act as "baseless hysteria,"and insisted that "tracking reading habits would betray [the government's] high regard for the First Amendment."From the U.S. Department of Justice. Researchers Closer To Learning The Underlying Logic Of The Olfactory S Researchers from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute have succeeded in mapping the unique patterns of neural activity produced by a wide range of odors, including vanilla, skunk, fish, urine, musk, and chocolate. The studies showed that found that, despite very complex patterning of neural activity, the odor representations are very similar among individuals. Elevated GGT Enzyme May Predict Risk Of Death From Cardiovascular Dise A simple blood test may identify people who have an increased risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, researchers report in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association. Satellite Images Of Asian Disaster A week after the tsunami that hit Asia on 26 December the death toll is still rising. Nearly 140 000 people are confirmed dead, more than 1.8 million people need food aid and an estimated five million are homeless. In From the Cold: Following Swans as They Migrate From Russia to Brita This site follows the path of Bewick's and whooper swans along their annual migration from the Russian Arctic to Great Britain from fall 2003 to spring 2004. Includes profiles of the swans, migration background and updates, and links to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) coverage of the migration. From the Wildfowl &Wetlands Trust, a wetland conservation organization based in the United Kingdom. Extracellular Protein Sensitizes Ovarian Cancer Cells To Chemotherapy Scientists have uncovered critical new details about the mechanisms that modulate the response of ovarian cancer cells to chemotherapy. The research, published by Cell Press in the December issue of Cancer Cell, helps to explain why many patients develop resistance to the taxane class of drugs and may lead to improved treatment of ovarian cancer.
