Modification Of Program Enables Prediction Of Gene Transcription A modification to an "ace"gene prediction program by computer scientists at Washington University in St. Louis now enables scientists to predict the very beginnings of gene transcription start sites and where the first splice occurs thereby defining the first exon of the gene. The modification to the gene prediction software TWINSCAN is called N-SCAN. No Single Gene For Eye Color, Researchers Prove A study by researchers from The University of Queensland's Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) and the Queensland Institute of Medical Research is the first to prove conclusively that there is no single gene for eye colour. Instead, it found that several genes determine the colour of an individual's eyes, although some have more influence than others. Cell Structure Interactive animated lessons provide material and tests about prokaryote, animal, and plant cells. At the end of this lesson, you should be able to recognize the difference between these types of cells and "understand the function of the organelles in theses different cells."Also includes a "construct a cell"feature. From a college textbook publisher. Researchers Watch Antibiotics, Bacteria Meet At Atomic Level A new understanding of an enzyme important for the transfer of genetic information in bacteria may help scientists improve current antibiotics and also create antibiotics that are less vulnerable to resistance. Researchers used extremely powerful imaging techniques to see, for the first time, exactly what happens between bacteria and antibiotics at the atomic level. Aspirin Is Safer Than Warfarin And Just As Effective For Treating Bloc To reduce the risk of stroke, partial blockage of arteries in the brain (intracranial stenosis) has for decades been treated with drugs such as aspirin and warfarin that reduce blood clotting. However, doctors have never had good evidence for choosing one therapy over the other. Now, results of a double-blind, randomized clinical trial show for the first time that aspirin works as well as warfarin with fewer side effects. Breast Cancer May Be 'Uniquely Sensitive' To Inhibitors Of PI3K Pathwa Because up to 75 percent of breast cancer patients have an abnormality in a specific cell signaling pathway, drugs that target different molecules along that pathway may be especially effective for treating the disease, says a researcher from The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. Matrix Cam Spies Flying Bullets A new camera tracks hot lead -- just like in the slow-motion "bullet time" scenes in The Matrix.
